It's a greyhound thing

Or is it yoga? A classic play bow. Joey was being a total goof ball tonight.

HBJ

Stands for Happy Birthday Joey. Yessiree, party central continues here in the gardens.

Our shy boy Joey is hitting the double-digits on Monday. Guess it's time for the Double-digit Gang to have a meeting, elect new officers and have an official Double-digit Gang photo taken.

Holy smokes this group is getting big.

Fresh grass

A few weeks ago I mentioned the tremendous need to get the lawn mowed. When we start losing greyhounds because the grass is too tall, it's time.

This week-end we finally dried up enough to mow (and for those more curious minds, we mow the acre with a John Deere riding mower. The little rotary push is all show and inspiration for exercise).

The greyhounds love freshly mowed grass. Joey was almost giddy as he walked around sniffing.

He's inhaled enough of the scent that it is taking him down, notice the tilt.

This is a common sight on mowing days. It's a good thing he's a black dog, the grass stains aren't as unsightly.

Joey, you are such a goof ball.

The doghouse is that way

Our field trip today lasted a little bit longer than we expected, dinner wasn't on time.

We were quickly forgiven, but they wanted to make sure that we knew we screwed up. Oops.

Tails of a shy dog

Nearly seven years ago Joey joined us at Greyhound Gardens. They called him a spook.

He was afraid of everything. Not because he had ever been abused, his trainer truly loved him, but because that was just the way he was wired.

If he were a child, he would be labeled as autistic I'm sure.

Joey made friends with all of the other greyhounds. He was curious about his new humans, but coming closer than ten feet was just to scary.

He adapted to his own routine in his own little world and that is where he lived without variation.

Somedays, it would take us hours just to get him to come inside. But never, ever would he come up to us to get his ears scratched.

And then, two years ago without any warning, he just couldn't stand it anymore. With the safety of a buddy, he came closer. Soon, the closer was all the way up to us and if we carefully reached over his friend, we could scratch his ears.

Now, seven years later, no matter where we are Joey is there. He even flips our forearms to make sure that he is getting his fair share and more of ear scratches. He has a lot of years to catch up on.

Oh Joey, Joey. You are just one hunk o' hound dog. So glad to know that you think the same of us.

Perfect Fall Day

Today was a perfect fall day. Perfect for the hounds to just hang out on the acre.

A perfect day to just watch the clouds float by.

A perfect day to take a nap.

And a perfect day just to catch a few rays.

Lovin' this fall weather.

All right, what's going on

I raised two teenage daughters. I am by nature, suspicious.

I didn't think about it much when I saw these two back by the fence.

Nor did I think very much about it when Jillian accompanied Joey and Slinky back towards the front of the acre.

I was a little curious when they started yapping at each other, wondering what they were chatting about.

But when they started whispering sweet nothings in each others ear, then I became a little suspicious about what happens when I'm not looking.

Oh Joey, Joey

Joey was the last of the puppers to come out and play with Jeff. Joey isn't new to the gardens, in fact he's been here for about six years. Jeff walked out to the truck with us the day we brought Joey home.

Joey is special.

When we brought Joey home, he was frightened of everything. Joey lives in a consistent world and does not like change and he wants to call the shots on what does change.

He graciously went up to greet Jeff, something he probably wouldn't have done a year ago.

And then he merrily went off to play in his own little world.

Oh Joey

Joey, I promise you that we did not forget your birthday yesterday.

Honestly, don't look at me like that. It's just, it's just that there was so much going on. You know, Mother's Day and all.

But Joey, you will have tons of nice days to run around and celebrate.

Happy 9th birthday Joey!

Confessions

I have a confession to make.

I'm a very shy dog. Don't even like my own shadow most of the time.

But every once in awhile now, I forget.

I get really curious about everything around me. I like to get my ears scratched.

and I actually lay down and relax for awhile. It only took me five years to do this.

Oh Joey, Joey

Nearly five years ago an extremely shy boy entered our lives. It took us almost four years before he came to us for an ear scratch.

And look at him now. On a cushion in the middle of the living room with me crawling all over trying to get a picture.

Every day is a greyt day for Joey now.

Mom, did you see any ghosts?

Ghost towns sound very scary, did you see any ghosts on your trip? Did you bring any home with you?

No Joey, we didn't see any ghosts, but there was some promise of seeing them.

The firsts two nights of our road trip we stayed at the Brunswick Hotel in Kingman, Arizona.

Three resident ghosts live there, an older gentleman who died in his room, an unknown woman and a little girl who died in an accident on the stairs. We didn't get to meet any of them.

There are also tales of a ghost named Eve at the Red Garter Bed and Breakfast. Perhaps she is one of the ladies of the evening that just never left. There was also a murder in the building, a man was murdered on these stairs in the mid-1940s. Ahhh, but we never witnessed any ghosts here either.

Perhaps the closest we got to any ghosts were the ghosts having their last supper in Rhyolite, Nevada.

Or the ghost that rides his bike through the streets at night in Rhyolite.

Something's up

And I don't think I like it.

And at the end of the day

I had a fabulous time in Las Vegas. I learned a ton, caught up with an old friend, met some new friends.

Karen did fabulously with the doggies. Even though this guy probably missed me most of all.

I knew I was coming home to a stack of other duties as assigned and a house that needs some quality time.

And at the end of the day, after all of the excitement, when I got home

I saw all of my family

I know what winning is all about.

Sheesh, Boys will be Boys

What is it with boys? I had two daughters and zero sons, so I don't know first hand if human boys behave like dog boys... but I have heard stories and I suspect that they do.

Yes Pasha, Minnie is a very cute little girl.

Joey, Talley is going to turn around and clean your clock. I won't see a thing when she does.

Out of the archives, two of my favorite fosters, Otis and Barney.
