Honorary greyhound for a week

This is Emma Weimar. She belongs to  my youngest daughter Holly and her husband Joe. They got married in December but as of Monday night, they'll be on their way to Mexico for a honeymoon.

Emma can hardly believe that they would choose a place to go that they couldn't take her, however.

Emma is an honorary greyhound for the week.

She accepted her honors with dignity and grace.

Once the honors were bestowed, the greyhounds put their foot down. There are rules to be followed.

Emma listened closely.

Barney, being the newbie in the gardens knew all of the rules and he had a lot to say.

Crystal, on the other hand took a more gentle approach whispering sweet nothings in Emma's ear.

'Twas an ear-ie night

A study in dyptychs. White and red brindle.

Fawn.

I guess with all of the spring-like noises, everyone was on ear alert.

Springtime in the gardens

Yo ladies, check out this grass. It is nearly longer than my long legs.

OK Crystal, we know the grass is long. Have you seen the amount of rain we have been getting? What do you expect?

Barney for one rather enjoys the cool long grass. It is much softer to lay down in.

Buddy took matters into his own paws and pointed the direction he thought we should be taking.

Sadly, an acre of hard work has begun.

The short grass is so much nicer on a little old ladies tootsies.

Just for the record, the day ended perfectly.

And how did you spend your week-end

It has been all of 30 years since I last wrote a term paper. Anyone that knows me, knows that writing makes my palms sweat.

Of course, it is called a term paper because you aren't supposed to wait until the week-end before it is due, it's assigned at the beginning of the term.

Oi vey, it will be awhile before I take another class for credits.

And then there was... what's her name?

Back in the day, my preferred hound mobile was a 1970 Volkswagon bus. I loved the bus, but I missed my automatic transmission and most importantly air conditioning.
The hounds were styling in that old bus.

I remember the day I picked up Crystal. This little girl was sugar with a pound of extra spice. All 47 lbs of her were total joy. My heart was a goner almost immediately.

As much as we loved her, she loved the acre. That girl loved to run and would run with anyone that take on her challenge. Note in the picture above that as Danny was closing in, she wapped him with her tail. (I never said she played fair).

We affectionately called her our little pocket rocket.

It was really important to the president of the group that Crystal be with another greyhound because she loved to play so much.

One of the beauties of greyhound adoption is that if a dog can't stay with it's family for whatever reason, the hound comes back to the group. It's good for the family, it's good for the next family and it is best for the hound.

While Crystal was with us, a family with four greyhounds was getting a divorce. Fandango, the shyest of the four came to Greyhound Gardens. Crystal immediately to a liking to this boy.

We had an adoption event up at the track in Portland and I was to bring Crystal and Fandango to the event. With a heavy heart, I loaded up the old bus and off we went.

Sure enough, the two found a home together. My heart was broken. I hated handing over her leash, she was my little pocket rocket. With giant crocodile tears I kissed her good-bye and wished she and Fandango a wonderful life.

My bus was not to go empty though. While one hand was letting go of Crystal's leash, the other hand was grabbing two leashes, both white and red brindle boys, just like Crystal. Eureka!

One boy was named Star. He was part of the divorced four pack. He was little older and oh so gentle. We had screened the home of a woman who had recently retired, she needed a gentle dog and I knew Star would be perfect. He went home the next day and lived happily ever after.

The other boy had bounced twice, he had a few house breaking issues we were hoping to eliminate by bringing him home and working with him. His name was Bold One and I thought that was weird, so I renamed him Barney.

Here's the unexpected fork in the road. Two and a half years ago, a friend of mine that watches for greyhounds to show up where they don't belong found Crystal on Craigslist. Crystal had been in her home for four years.

When I got wind that she was on Craigslist, I jumped, hopped and screamed at the chance to get her back. My pocket rocket was coming back to the gardens. She's still my tiny little 47 lb girlie and she still tears up the back yard as she races to and fro.

And she's home.

Stay tuned for the riveting conclusion tomorrow.

Got mud?

If not, we have plenty to go around. Yesterday this impromptu pond sank back into the ground.

Today, we are back to Greyhound Swamps.

Stupid weather

We were all ears this week-end when we heard that a snow storm was coming our direction.

You see, we live in Oregon and I work for the community college and when there is the slightest hint of bad weather, we get a snow day! Woo hoo, no work.

So we started doing the happy dance in anticipation of a day off, maybe two.

Then, we realized we shoulda done a snow dance. Day by day the forecast changed.

Snow was no longer in our future. Just rain. Day after day of rain.

We'll give that weatherman a piece of our mind. We'll show him.

Dancing in the New Year

Have fun ladies, bring in the New Year in style.

Overall, it has been a great year.

We were quite sad to say good bye to Duncan when the evil cancer monster took over.

And we where so delighted to have the twins join us. Yeppers, they make our world so colorful.

Not sure what lies ahead, but we'll make it good no matter what.

So go ahead ladies, shake your bootie and make a few new friends on the Saturday Pet Blog Hop.

My splash is bigger than your splash

Neither hail nor snow nor sheet of rain can deter Flocko from playing his nightly game of Flocko ball.

It was raining bull mastiffs and and great danes today, all day. But Flocko did not care. Water was entering the garage and the basement, but Flocko had to play ball.

Crystal, our itsy bitsy 47 lb. greyhound couldn't wait to run up to Flocko, our biggest boy weighing in at 80 lbs., she had to make sure he saw the big splash she made while running.

Unimpressed, Flocko took this as a challenge.

In a very big way.

Just for the record, this little rain puddle used to be lovely green grass. The dogs lay in it's shade by summer and trance in it's branches by winter.

Quite proud of his splash, he walked right on by Crystal, snarking something about "eat my dust."

But I'm pretty sure he meant to say "have a raindrop on me."

The forest sprites

Seriously girls, we have an acre of grass. I just mopped the floors. Must you all just stand in the mud?

Monday, December 06, 2010

Ummm, ladies...

I'm a couch potato too. Just where would you suggest I sit?

Thursday, December 02, 2010

Oops

Just like summer, the went that way. Gone.

Sound the alarms!

Something has happened to the back yard.

It's cold, it's all over the place.

It doesn't smell like anything good to eat.

And everywhere we go, we find more.

Who wants to lay down and warm up in the sun now?

Tuesday, November 23, 2010

Oh the weather outside is frightful

But the couch is so delightful.

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.

Nothing like a little fall sunshine to bring on the backyard get togethers.

Woo Hoo!
